The Public Health Agency provides guidance to staff in residential and care homes for the management of respiratory-related viruses, such as influenza. Each institution must have a strict policy in place for cleaning and disinfection of their residences.
- Cleaning should take place at least daily using warm water and detergent to remove dirt and contamination.
- During an outbreak, a disinfection routine performed at least twice daily reduces the number of germs to a level at which they are not harmful, but is only effective if surfaces and equipment have been cleaned thoroughly beforehand (unless a combined detergent/disinfectant product is used).
What does 'BS EN' mean?
Simply put, BS EN means 'European Standard adopted as British Standard'.
BS EN 1276 is the European standard for the bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants. In order to pass this standard, products must prove a bacteria kill rate of 99.999% within 5 minutes.
In care settings bacteria and viruses can be carried from person to person unless disinfection is carried out, which reduces the risks of cross infection.
Disinfectants kill bacteria and viruses, and should be used on an already clean surface, otherwise they won't be effective against cross-contamination. Disinfectants also need to be used with a specified dilution and duration to be effective.
Disinfection products used in the care setting should meet BS EN standards.
